Rural Economic Assistance League, Inc. (REAL), established in 1973, is the parent organization of REAL Transit, the designated Rural Transit District serving the Coastal Bend region of South Texas. Public transportation services began in 1985 to address mobility gaps for older adults and individuals with disabilities. In 1995, REAL Transit was formally established as a Rural Transit District and political subdivision of the State of Texas under Texas Transportation Code Chapter 458 and receives state transit funding.

REAL Transit delivers mobility solutions across a nine-county region—Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Live Oak, Refugio, and San Patricio Counties—focused on improving access to employment, healthcare, education, and essential services. Through a combination of demand-response transportation and micro-transit services in Alice/Rancho Alegre, Beeville, and Rockport/Fulton, REAL Transit reduces geographic and economic barriers while providing flexible, customer-centered travel options.

Regional connectivity is a core benefit of the system. REAL Transit operates intercity services that link rural communities to major economic and medical centers, including daily service to Corpus Christi and as needed connections to the urbanized areas of Laredo, San Antonio and Victoria. Coordination with adjacent rural transit districts and the urban transit provider strengthens system integration, expands trip options, and improves continuity of travel across jurisdictions.

REAL Transit further enhances community well-being by coordinating non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) through regional brokerage agreements, ensuring eligible residents can access critical healthcare services. Partnerships with local governments, community organizations, and human service providers align resources and extend mobility to vulnerable populations.

Operationally, REAL Transit manages five transit centers in Alice, Beeville, Falfurrias, Sinton, and Rockport, with centralized administration, scheduling, and dispatch functions in Alice to maximize efficiency and reliability.

REAL Transit is governed by REAL’s 12-member volunteer Board of Directors providing policy, planning, and fiscal oversight.
